Discover Glimmers: Finding the joy in life

Updated: Jun 30, 2023

In a world often dominated by negativity and challenges, it's crucial that we explore the flip side of the coin—the glimmers that can inspire and uplift us. While triggers may evoke negative emotions and reactions, glimmers can illuminate our lives with positivity, hope, and motivation.

Now I am not talking about fake, toxic positivity. You can read about that in my blog here. This isn’t about denying the very real, bad stuff that can happen in life. This is about being open to seeing the beauty in the every day. So how do we discover glimmers?

By shifting our focus towards these uplifting moments, we can create a more resilient and joyful mindset, and who doesn't want that? In this blog, we will look into the concept of glimmers and discuss how they have the power to transform our lives for the better.

What are Glimmers?

Deb Dana was, I believe the first person to talk about glimmers, as the opposite of triggers. Check out her website if you have a chance.

Glimmers can be seen as fleeting sparks of positivity and inspiration that ignite within us. They are moments of clarity, joy, or beauty that catch our attention and remind us of the goodness in the world. Glimmers can manifest in various forms—be it a heartfelt conversation, an act of kindness, an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon, or even a personal achievement. They can be as simple as noticing a flower when you are out on a walk.

Unlike triggers that activate negative emotions, and may remind of us of past traumas, glimmers evoke positive feelings, leaving a lasting impact on our overall well-being.

How do we Discover Glimmers?

To harness the power of glimmers, it's essential to develop an awareness of them. Often, we tend to overlook or dismiss these moments, overshadowed by the weight of our daily struggles. However, by intentionally seeking out and acknowledging glimmers, we can amplify their impact on our lives. Practicing mindfulness and being fully present in each moment can help us spot these subtle spark.

I find it helpful when I see something beautiful or notice that I am feeling happy to say it aloud. So, if you see a middle aged woman wandering around the Surrey countryside muttering “oh that’s pretty” or “I feel happy right now,” that will be me, noticing the glimmers. I might look a bit bonkers, but I promise it works!

Additionally, surrounding ourselves with positive influences, such as uplifting books, music, or supportive friends, can enhance our ability to recognize and cultivate glimmers. Engaging in activities that bring us joy and fulfilment, such as hobbies, creative pursuits, or spending time in nature, can also create an environment conducive to experiencing glimmers regularly. I keep going on about this, but find something you love to do, and then do it a lot!

Amplifying the Power of Glimmers

Glimmers possess the remarkable ability to transform our perspective and catalyse positive change. By intentionally focusing on these uplifting moments, we can amplify their power and influence in our lives. Reflecting on glimmers and extracting the lessons and inspiration they offer can serve as a wellspring of motivation during challenging times.

Sharing our glimmers with others through storytelling, art, or social interactions can create a ripple effect, spreading positivity and inspiring others to recognize and embrace their own glimmers. Additionally, incorporating gratitude practices into our daily lives can help us appreciate and amplify the impact of these positive moments. I know there are days when it feels like there is nothing to be grateful for, but it honestly helps to find something if we can.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Resilience

Developing a support network of like-minded individuals who value and encourage the pursuit of glimmers can provide strength and encouragement during challenging times. Spend time with friends who make you feel better about yourself and life in general. By collectively celebrating and uplifting each other, we create an environment that fosters resilience and positivity.

In a world often consumed by triggers and negativity, embracing glimmers offers a transformative path towards a more positive and fulfilling life. By actively seeking out these moments of inspiration, recognizing their significance, and amplifying their impact, we can cultivate a resilient mindset and spread positivity to those around us. So, let us shift our focus from triggers to glimmers, and watch as our lives become just that little bit brighter.
